Last Saturday night the Y Not Island was packed with Dangriga fans who came out to support their home team, Dangriga Warriors (3 - 4), as they took on the Cayo Western Ballaz (7 - 1), who came in full force to support their team. Dangriga Warriors jumped out to an early start as they took a 14 - 7 lead in the first quarter, as they packed the paint defensively, limiting the space for the big men from Western Ballaz to operate. After a few jumpers to end the quarter, the team from out West was able to cut the lead to 18 - 16 at the end of the first quarter. At the start of the second quarter Cayo Western Ballaz took a 23 - 18 lead but Dangriga Warriors were able to respond behind the aggressive play of Trevaughn Usher and Gary Francisco, as they gave the home team a 25 - 24 lead going into the half.

The score remained close up to the mid way point of the third quarter, when Richard Troyer got hot, sinking four three pointers to open the Cayo Western Ballaz lead to a 45 - 36 lead at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the visiting team was able to extend the lead to 15 points, as they were able to hold on to the double digit lead to the end of the game, winning 61 - 48.

Cayo Western Ballaz was lead by Richard Troyer who finished the night with 17 points, 4 three pointers, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. Farron "Far D" Louriano struggled offensively, finishing with only 6 points, but was able to grab the game high 16 rebounds, remaining as the top rebounder in the League after 8 weeks. Kurt "Chengo" Burgess finished the night with a double double of 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Ivan Flowers had 7 points, 6 assists and 2 steals. In a losing effort, Dangriga Warriors were lead by Trevaughn Usher who finished with the game high 20 points to go with 2 rebounds and 2 assists. Gary Francisco was the only other offensive threat, as he finished with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals, while Frank Williams ended the night with 4 points and 10 rebounds.

With the win, Cayo Western Ballaz remains atop the standings with a 7 - 1 record, tied for first place with San Pedro Tiger Sharks, while Dangriga Warriors fell below .500 for the first time this season, with a losing record of 3 - 4. This Thursday Dangriga Warriors will travel to the UB Gymnasium in Belmopan to take on the Belmopan Point Bandits, as they try to snap their two game losing streak and get back to winning ball, while Cayo Western Ballaz will play host to the Orange Walk Running Rebels on Friday night at the SHC auditorium. Both Dangriga and Belmopan are outside looking in, for that fourth and final playoff berth. Both games will start at 9 p.m. as the National Elite Basketball League moves into week 9 of its tournament, with only 5 more weeks remaining.
