On Saturday night the game of the week really lived up to its billing, as the Big 3 from both teams came out to ball where Cayo Western Ballaz (9 - 2 ) hosted the San Pedro Tiger Sharks (10 - 1) in a battle to claim the #1 seed in the National Elite Basketball League. The Sacred Heart College auditorium was packed to capacity as over 1,200 fans poured in to support their team in one of the greatest basketball turnouts for over a decade in the country. The game surely lived up to the hype, as the SHC auditorium had standing room only and the atmosphere in the building was intense from the player introductions. The home team jumped out to an early 6 - 4 lead, ending the quarter leading 15 - 9. The intensity of the game was there from tip off, as both teams came in focused with a mission to leave that game as the #1 team in the league. At the half Cayo Western Ballaz controlled the momentum of the game, holding on to a slim 6 point margin, 33 - 27 in a low scoring half, due to the intense defensive efforts of both teams.
Midway through the third quarter the lead was still 6 points for the home squad, but they were able to stretch it to a double digit lead, leading 51 - 41, and ending the quarter with a 6 point lead, 54 - 48 going into the decisive fourth quarter. At the half time mark in the fourth Cayo Western Ballaz was nurturing a slim 3 point lead as San Pedro Tiger Sharks was slowing gaining the momentum down the stretch. With key buckets by Darwin Leslie and Winston Pratt, the San Pedro Tiger Sharks took a 4 point lead with 2 minutes remaining in the game, which they sealed by hitting key free throws. At the final whistle the visiting team was able to claim the 70 - 65 big W, leaving San Ignacio with the #1 seed in the tournament after week 11.
San Pedro Tiger Sharks was lead by Winston Pratt who scored 17 points while ripping 17 rebounds and having 6 steals while Jamal Kelly tallied 13 points, 3 steals and 3 assists. Darwin "Puppy" Leslie finished the night with 12 points and 7 rebounds while Michael Adams had 11 points and 9 rebounds. In a losing effort Farron "Far-D" Louriano had the game high 29 points and 15 rebounds, with 13 of his rebounds being on the offensive glass. Richard Troyer finished the game with a double double, scoring 17 points and pulling 11 rebounds while Kurt "Chengo" Burgess scored 9 points while getting 20 caroms.
Cayo Western Ballaz was able to hold the lead for 35 minutes of the game but fell short down the stretch, where the visiting team maintained their composure to seal the victory. Tiger Sharks scored 16 points off turnovers compared to Cayo Western Ballaz 6 points, while Tiger Sharks netted 14 points off the bench compared to the home team's 2 points. The home team out rebounded Tiger Sharks 54 - 46 and scored 4 more points in the paint at 42 - 38. With the win, Tiger Sharks is one win away from claiming the #1 seed going into the playoffs while the Cayo Western Ballaz has now fallen to the #2 seed.
