Corozal and Belize City are Champions in the Sprite/Belikin Beer 3x3 basketball tour!!!
On Saturday August 4, 2012, 6 teams in the Men’s category and 5 teams in the U 18 category from across the country participated in the Sprite/Belikin 3x3 Finals held at Jamborees.

Marcell Richards, Alton Herrera, Benedict Terry, Jason Grant

In the Men’s category, teams were placed in two pools of three teams. In pool play, the team with the best record in each pool advances to the semifinal rounds. The remaining four teams then play each other to advance to the semifinal round. Teams, results, and final standings are attached.

When the final buzzer sounded, the Corozal team defeated the Orange walk team 15 to 10. The team from Corozal included Marcell Richards, Jason Grant, Alton Herrera and Benedict ‘Big Ben’ Terry.  Benedict was a force to reckon with the entire day. His post presence was superior on this day and opposing teams couldn’t match up with him.  A quick history of Big Ben shows that he grew up in Libertad and played for the UB Black Jaguars earning a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. He recently returned from the University of Alabama with a master’s degree in Accounting. He was also a member of the University of Alabama practice team.

The opposing team of Winston Pratt, Farron Louriano, Ryan Zuniga and Darren Bovell made a late run with 3 minutes in the second half to tie the game but their legs seem to give out in the remaining minutes. Jason Grant of Corozal played a big final game scoring 7 of the 15 points.

Tariq Middleton, Brian White, Devin Daly, Rodrick Williams

In the U 18 category the Belize City team with four National team players including Devin Daly easily defeated all four opponents going undefeated for the day. The format for this category was a round robin play in the first round where the top four teams advanced to the semifinal round. Belize City defeated Belmopan 14 to 4 in the final game. National team player Akeem Watters gave a valiant effort but was just outmatched by the strong team from Belize City.

Results for U 18 category are also attached. Results of Finals tournament can also be seen at 3x3planet.com.

The Corozal men’s team will now make preparations to participate in the FIBA 3x3 World Tour in New York on August 18th and 19th. A National team will be selected to represent Belize in the U 18 World Championship in Spain on September 27th-29th 2012.

Winston Pratt makes a strong move to the basket

In the Men’s category the field is massive. Representing Orange Walk are UB players Winston Pratt, Farron Louriano, Ryan Zuniga and Darren ‘MVP’ Bovell.  Teams from each location have a star player. From San Ignacio, Kurt ‘Chengo’ Burgess will have to lead a young group including Shelton Defour, Elvis Usher and Dijan McNabb to try to take the title. Dangriga may have a surprise for the field with Lennox Spencer teaming up with Edgar Mitchell.  The team representing Belmopan is solid all around and includes Darwin ‘Puppy’ Leslie, Lindbergh ‘Prince Graham, Ty Bradley and Leon ‘Bigs’ Williams. Just returning from studies, Benedict ‘Big Ben’ Terry will be hard to handle and he will take his team from Corozal deep into the tournament. Last but not least, the team representing Belize City is the daddy of the bunch and will be the fans sentimental favorites. Vince ‘Post Estrada along with Angus ‘Walla’Cherrington and Cassian “Russian ‘Flowers will try to use experience and skills in an effort to make the journey to New York.

Two More Winners of the Sprite/Belikin 3x3 basketball tour emerge!!!
After the dust settled at the Drums of Our Father roundabout in Dangriga this past Saturday, two champions emerged in the Sprite/Belikin 3x3 basketball tour.

In the U 18 category sponsored by the Sprite, Independence United upset Harlem, one of the favorites from Dangriga, in overtime to be the southern regions representative on August 4th in the Finals of the tour. The Dangriga team had a comfortable lead with about 3 minutes remaining when Kenroy “Bow wow” Palacio came up in Lebronesque fashion with leg cramps and had to be sidelined. With only two players, the Independence team tied the game and never looked back even when Bow wow returned. Although his team lost, Brandon Castillo of Harlem caught the eyes of the BBF’s officials and he will definitely be considered for future National teams.
In the Men’s category sponsored by Belikin beer, Black Mambaz from Dangriga edged out Hopkins in the finals to be one of six teams that will compete for the Men’s 3x3 title at the Riverside Tavern in August. One of the smoothest point guards in the country, Edgar Mitchell, along with Lennox Spencer, Jamir Flores and Ray Cruz will make that journey to Belize with hopes of representing Belize in New York.
The Sprite/Belikin 3x3 basketball tour heads to Corozal and Orange Walk this upcoming weekend.

BBF partners with Sprite & Belikin Beer to launch National 3x3 Basketball Tour!!!

The Belize Basketball Federation is pleased and excited to announce the launch of the first national 3x3 basketball tour for the senior men and male U 18 categories. 3x3 basketball is a new category of basketball that has been aggressively promoted by our affiliate body, FIBA and will become an official sport in the 2016 or 2020 Olympics. The 3x3 game is a variation of basketball where two teams each consisting of three players play on a half court.

The BBF is partnering with Sprite in the launch of the U 18 category and with Belikin Beer for the launch of the Men’s category.  The Sprite /Belikin  National 3x3 basketball tour will be held in each town across the country on streets, parking lots or basketball courts during the months of July and August 2012. The District Basketball Associations will coordinate tournaments in each district. Teams consisting of four players and a coach can participate.

FIBA basic 3x3 rules will apply.  Winners from each district will play in a finals in Belize City. A slam-dunk contest will also be held in each district as part of the tour.

As a part of the sponsorship, Sprite and Belikin Beer is providing support for the purchase of mobile basketball systems that will transported to each district for the games.

The winning team in the Men’s category will automatically qualify to participate in the FIBA 3x3 world tour that will be held in New York on August 18-19, 2012.The top two teams from this tour will advance to the World tour finals in Miami in September 2012.

In the U 18 category, Belize was selected by FIBA to participate in the FIBA 3x3 World Championships to be held in Seville, Spain from September 27-30, 2012. For this category a national 3x3 team will be selected.

For Belize to participate in both of these international events hosted by FIBA, the BBF has to organize 3x3 basketball tournaments in each category in Belize. The BBF is grateful to Sprite and Belikin Beer for sponsorship of this national tournament. This is a demonstration of the partnership that can be forged between the private sector and non-profit organizations.
