National Junior Basketball Head Coach and President of the BBF meet Minister of Education, Sports & Youth!!!

In 2011, National Junior basketball team Head Coach Matthew Smiling received a coaching scholarship to attend the International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program (ICECP) conducted by the US Olympic Committee in the United States. A major component of this program is for Coach Smiling to develop a project that will benefit basketball in Belize. Coach Smiling’s project is the development of a Coaching education Program for elementary, High School and Grassroots basketball in Belize.

On Wednesday April 18, Coach Smiling and the President of the Belize Basketball Federation met with Minister Patrick Faber to discuss the project and to seek the Ministry of Education’s support for this program to be implemented in Elementary schools across the country. The Minister gave his support for the program and will organize subsequent meetings with the relevant personnel within the Ministry.

In the coming week, Coach Smiling will travel to Switzerland to make a final presentation of his project to a panel of experts.

University of Belize Continues to Dominate ATLIB Basketball!!!

The University of Belize (UB) Hosted the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions in Belize’s (ATLIB) Southern Regional Tournament this past Saturday at UB’s Recreation and Sports Center (Gym), in Belmopan. The tournament was inaugurated by UB’s President Dr. Cary Fraser, who wished all teams success and also spoke of the importance of sportsmanship, discipline, organization and working together to achieve goals. Also present was the Dean of Student Affair, Mr. William Neal who thanked all teams for their participation. The teams included the University of Belize Black Jaguars (male and female), Galen University (male), Ecumenical Junior College (male and female), Independence Junior College (male), and Sacred Heart Junior College (male).

Black Jaguars both male and female teams were victorious in their games at the ATLIB Basketball Southern Regional held last Saturday. In the first game Galen University (GU) was triumphant over Independence Junior College (IJC), scoring 61-43.  Ecumenical Junior College (EJC) and Sacred Heart Junior College (SHJC) played the second game which ended up 77-54 in favor of EJC. The UB Lady Black Jaguars toppled Ecumenical Junior College 27-21. The top Black Jaguar scorers were Glenda Torres and Kimberly Spencer. This female decided first and second for the region. The following game, the UB Black Jaguars defeated the guys from Independence Junior College by 68-26. Top scorers for Black Jaguars were: Farron Louriano, Winston Pratt, and Alfred Bainton. Galen University up against Sacred Heart Junior College (SHJC) won 78-63. Dribbling down to the last game, UB Black Jaguars outscored EJC 61-48 in favor of the defending champions, UB Black Jaguars. Top scorers were Farron Louriano, Daniel Nolberto, and Travis Lennon. Thus the Black Jaguars ended as the number one side with two wins, zero losses same as Galen University but with better scoring difference.

The Finals will be held in San Ignacio at the Falcon Field this coming Saturday, games are as follows:

Belize Association of Basketball Officials Elects New Executive Committee!!!!

The Belize Association of Basketball Officials, BABO, held its elections this past Saturday, January 28 at Belmopan Comprehensive School in Belmopan City.  A new executive was elected. Members are:  Marvin Garcia, President, Denfield “Teddy” Andrewin, Vice President, David Lacey,Secretary and Kevin Pitts, Treasurer.

In December, a National Certification Examination was held in Belmopan where officials obtained their national referee license.  They were certified at Level 1, 2 or 3, with Level  1 being the highest level.  Certification of referees are scheduled twice yearly with the next exam in June of 2012. Below are the names of the 24 certified officials in the country with their level of certification.

National U-12 Team at Mini Basket Festival!!!
The Belize National U 12 male basketball team returned from Merida on Monday November 7,2011  after participating in the FIBA Americas Mini Basketball Festival. They played 7 games and finished with 4 wins and 3 losses. In Mini basket, winning is not stressed, participation is the primary focus. It is mandatory for all players to play at least 1 quarter. At the end of the Festival participants received gifts of t-shirts and bags.

Families of players from the Montejo team of Merida accommodated players. Host families took our players to the movies, mall and to restaurants. Even a birthday party was held for one of our athletes. Host’s families were given Thank you letters from our Belizean U 12 team.
Coach Brads Neal and Asst Coach Harry Grant headed the Belize delegation. A few parents also accompanied the team.

National U-12 Basketball Team Travel to Merida To Participate in Mini Basket Festival !!!
Over the past four weeks, the Belize Basketball Federation (BBF) has been holding tryouts to select Under 12 male players to represent Belize at a Mini Basket Festival to be held in Merida, Mexico from November 4-6, 2011.  
From the over 50 players from across the country that attended workout sessions, eleven players were selected to represent Belize.

The Mini Basket Festival is a gathering of countries from the Americas for young men and women under the age of twelve. These young players participate in games designed to expose and enrich them about the game of basketball. Victor Ojeda, the Director of the Basketball Academy for FIBA Americas said” We want this to be a festival in every sense of the word, with Mini Basketball being played but also for it to serve as a cultural exchange between our children to contribute to their growth in and outside of the court. The BBF recognizes that Mini basketball is the foundation for the development of all the children participating in basketball.  Participation in this Festival was made possible through the sponsorship of the Ministry of Sport. Creative Graphic Impression of Orange Walk provided the National team uniforms.
