Spartans Cap Perfect U-17 Season with Championship!!!

The Foreshore Spartans are the DBA U17 Tournament Champions. The BTL sponsored tournament concluded this weekend with the Foreshore Spartans defeating Harlem 56-50 in the finals. The victory marked the team’s 8th consecutive win of the season. The first time these teams met back on March 5th, both were unbeaten and the game was billed as the game of the season. After climbing to a 12 point lead in the third quarter, Harlem pressed their way back into the game, behind Egbert Martinez’s 24-point performance, only to loose by 2. This final game followed a similar pattern, with Foreshore being the aggressor early pushing a five point half time lead to double figures by mid-third quarter. Harlem proved their resilience once again battling back to bring the lead down to three with under 2 minutes to go in the game. This was after losing point guard Brandon Castillo late in the third quarter after he fouled out. Castillo had a miserable outing only netting 5 points, 2 assists to go with his 5 fouls that sidelined him for the rest of the game. Harlem’s best hope, Egbert Martinez, finished with 15 points to lead his team, but missed 11 free throws, after going 12-14 on the line in the previous encounter. Both teams struggled from the line but the difference was Foreshore struggled early while Harlem struggled in the fourth quarter when it really mattered as the game was reduced to a free throw shooting contest late. For the Spartans, eventual tourney MVP, Trevon Mitchell had a big double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead his team in both categories. The Spartans maintained balance as usual with 3 players other than Mitchell also scoring in double figures. Darren Levy and Lucien Hasbun had 11 each while Hubert Usher finished with 10. The Spartans like their U15 counterparts, the Junior Spartans, now look forward to taking on the Punta Gorda teams on Saturday, April 9 in the Southern Regional finals to earn a spot in the National finals to be held in Orange Walk in the up-coming weeks.

Foreshore Spartans close regular season undefeated, while Backatown Warriors end 3-game losing streak!!!

The Foreshore Spartans end their regular season undefeated with a sixth straight win. They closed capped their impressive season, so far, with a win over the Hopkins U17 team that was fighting to gain a fourth seed and a playoff berth. It would not be a walk-over for the mighty Spartans, but they powered their way through with power forward Trevon Mitchell and his 14 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Spartans center Jordan Walters continued to be a defensive presence in the middle with 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots, but more imposing was his season high offensive output of 14 points. Hopkins kept the game close behind the efforts of Deshawn Nunez and Hyden Casimiro who both had 10 points a piece. That wasn’t enough. Foreshore squeezed out the 41-36 victory and clinched the number one seed going into the playoffs.

In the second game, the Backatown Warriors, like Hopkins , were trying to secure the fourth seed and a chance at redemption with a playoff berth. Their opponents, the Cadet Trailblazers were simply trying to secure their first non-forfeit win of the season. The Cadets played like the team with more to gain and they led almost the entire game, but their hopes were dashed when Johnathan Cal missed the first of two free throws with 0.1 seconds on the clock and his team down by two. Cal made the second, but it was not enough to force overtime. Cal finished with 12 points to lead the Trailblazers, while Francis Noralez added 4 points and 13 rebounds. The Warriors guard Aaron Castillo led his team with 14 points and 5 rebounds, while forward Marton Alvarez had his best game of the season by contributing 12 points and 9 rebounds.

The final games of the season will be played in Hopkins this Saturday, March 19, 2011.
