Belmopan Bandits Back Home With a Win!!! PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 03 March 2014 22:01

Last Saturday night at the UB Gym, the Belmopan Bandits rolled over the Toledo Diplomats with a score of 76-64, giving the Diplomats their first loss of the season. It seems that the long workout hours are finally starting to pay off for the Bandits. The team showed signs of improvement, not only in team’s management but also in coordination and execution of plays.

The play took some time to begin. Originally scheduled to start at 8:00 p.m. sharp, it was delayed by a whole hour; and began at 9:00 p.m.  The cause for the delay? When the teams arrived, the ballcourt was flooded with water and officials did not want to put the physical integrity of players at risk, a wise decision. Nevertheless, the fans seemed to be in sync with what was going on since most did show up until after nine. In the opening quarter, both teams pounced on the court – scoring and battling their opponents to limit their chances of hitting back.  As the game progressed, everyone thought the Bandits would win the quarter; but near the end, the Diplomats hit a three pointer from the hands of Santos Avila to finish with a stalemate 18-18.

In the second quarter, the rhythm slowed down a bit. Belmopan was able to put the brakes on Toledo. Most notably curbed was Toledo’s three point shooting which killed the San Pedro Tigersharks a week early.  In that game, the Diplomats were able to tally up twelve three pointers! Compare to that, the three they were able to squeeze out this week seems meager. By the end of the second quarter, the score was 34-31 in favor of the Bandits.

In the second half, the Bandits seemed to have been injected with a shot of energy.  They came out stronger than in the first half and maintained a scoring drive right through to the end of the game. Nevertheless, the game in the third quarter was still close, ending 55-49 in favor of the Bandits. The fourth quarter generated nice plays from both teams but it was the Bandits who had the upper hand. They were able to keep the game at a lively pace and leave the Diplomats behind by twelve points.  When the final whistle was blown, the Bandits were up by a score of 76-64. The Belmopan fans came out of the UB Gym satisfied as the Bandits moved 2-1 in the league standing and most importantly kept an undefeated record at home.

The Bandits’ three point production improved in this game. They netted seven three pointers, mainly at the hands of Kyle Pascascio and Stephen Williams. The top scorers for the Bandits were: Kyle Pascascio with 25 pts, Jordan Young and Chris Rodriguez with 14 points each. In a losing effort; Evon Lino scored 19 pts while Santos Avila had 17 pts. Week 4 will see Belmopan visiting Corozal on Friday at 9:00 pm and Toledo hosting Belize City No Limits on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Ecumenical high School in Dangriga.

Cayo Western Ballaz Remains Undefeated!!! PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 03 March 2014 21:57

Cayo Western Ballaz (3 - 0) hosted their first home game this past Saturday at the Sacred Heart College Auditorium in San Ignacio Town, as they went up against Dangriga Warriors (1 - 1). The Cayo fans were all hyped for this game as they packed the SHC auditorium to support their home team, especially since this was the first time that San Ignacio has ever fielded a basketball team at this level of competition Dangriga jumped out to an early 9 - 2 lead after which Cayo Western Ballaz was able to eliminate the slow start, finishing the quarter on a 14 - 3 run to take a 18 - 12 lead at the end of the first quarter. At half time the lead increased to 31 - 24, with great defense prevailing, which lead to the low half time score. In the third quarter Cayo Western Ballaz went to a full court trap that opened the lead to 14 points at the end of the third quarter, 48 - 34. However, Dangriga gave a run in the fourth with a few three pointers, trimming to lead to 6 points, after which the Cayo squad was able to hold on to its lead to take the win 63 - 52 as they remain the only undefeated team in the National Elite Basketball League.

Farron Louriano was again the leading scorer for Western Ballaz as he netted 17 points, while grabbing the team high 13 rebounds and dazzled the crowd with a monster dunk in the first half. Point guard Ivan Flowers finished the game with 13 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals while Richard Troyer sank 12 points and pulled 8 caroms. In a losing effort, Gary Francisco was the high man for Dangriga Warriors as he scored 13 points to go with his 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals, while Trevaughn Usher finished with 12 points and 4 steals. Macario Augustine had the game high 14 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

Cayo's biggest lead was 14 points, while Dangriga had a 6 point lead in the first quarter. Cayo netted 21 points off turnovers, while Dangriga was only able to must 8, but Dangriga outrebounded the team from the West 48 - 43. With the victory Cayo Western Ballaz is the only team with 3 wins, while Dangriga dropped to an even 1 - 1 record.   This coming weekend Dangriga will travel north to take on the winless Orange Walk Running Rebels (0 - 3) on Friday night, and that game will be televised live on Channel 5, while Cayo Western Ballaz will head out to the island to take on San Pedro (2 - 1) Tigersharks. That game will be a battle of the two top teams in the league.

The Smart No Limit Soldiers have been getting better and better with every practice session and improvements were apparent in the game against the Corozal Heats a week ago.  Going into last Friday’s match against the Orange Walk Running Rebels at the Bird’s Isle, the Belize City No Limit Soldiers were determined to show their fans that they were worthy of representing the district, with “Beast Mode” being their mantra for the night and quite likely for many more nights to come.

The Soldiers dominated the game from the start, never relinquishing their lead for the entire 40 minutes.  And holding the Running Rebels Star, and NEBL scoring leader, Randy Usher to just 16 points for the game, 14 less than his season average.  Every huddle for Team No Limit was intense, with coach Bennett barking out instructions in an effort to fire up his team even when the Soldiers were up by as many as 27 points.  It soon became evident that this game wasn’t about getting a victory over the Running Rebels, but to properly execute a game plan and playing style from start to finish.
Smart No Limit’s biggest run of the game was  17 to nothing. They were again dominant on the glass, winning the rebound battle 73 to 36. The Soldiers got 50 points in the paint, and even had great contributions from their 2nd unit with 32 points off the bench in the game. As a team they continue to make improvements in their free throws, as they shot 23 for 42 from the line this game for 55%.  And when the final buzzer sounded, the No Limit Soldiers got the big “W” with a final score of 83 to 59.

The surprise of the night came in the form of No Limit point guard Akeem Trapp, who finally got some playing time this season. Trapp would have a game high 5 steals, and  lead the Belize City Soldiers in scoring with 16 points shooting 5 for 13 from the field and a perfect 5 for 5 from the charity stripe.  The captain Greg “Chippy” Rudon flirted with a triple double as he put up 14 points, pulled down 9 boards and dished out 7 assists.  Brian White had a double double of 15 points and 14 rebounds, as did Andrew “Mr Throw Down” Ortiz, who had 10 boards and 11 points including a couple amazing dunks that shook up the island.  The big man Matthew Young also established himself in the middle, as he got 11 rebounds for Team No Limit.

It seems as if The Belize City Smart No Limit Soldiers are a team on a mission, and will no doubt look to keep this winning streak alive as they head down to Punta Gorda Toledo for their 4th game of the season. This Saturday they’ll take the No Limit show on the road when they face the Toledo Diplomats inside the PG Sporting Complex.
